Music You Love to Listen to but not Play to

It was a joke but I studied classical drums for 2 years. Finally I dropped out and studied something else which had nothing to do with music. But always played drums in bands too.

Ever play cymbals on Tchaikovsky Symphony #4? 1st through 3rd Tacet. play last 4 measures of the 4th mvt. I always hated rehearsals; counting all those measures rest! I finally realized if I just simply listened to the damned piece I'd know when it was time to play the last bars. Duoh!

Yeah, country lyrics after 1978...I think they just ran out of ideas after Haggard and Jones (although Vince Gill and a few others can still pen a decent sappy love song, but you won't hear it on the radio these days). Remember, it's not can't it's cain't (i.e. "I cain't stop luvin' yew"). Now get those lyrics copywritten before Rig and Bitch or Gontmummery Tentgry steal em' and make oodles of money on it. You should at least be able to get 2.5% publishing after adding 15 more writers names to the orig. copyright; isn't that the current rip-off rate for Nashville?

Another example,

I was listening to oldies radio in the car the other day. They played 3 or 4 great songs in a row: Angel of the Morning, Along Comes Mary, Traces of Love, Baby it's You. I love listening to that stuff. It's very well arranged and orchestrated. But, it's not that much fun when I try to groove to it.

And yeah, CnW has it's occasional well-penned tune. The ballads are usually very strong for that genre. [A lot of it's simply "80s lite rock w a twang" anyway. /;-p]
Like any other style, really. There's good, once you weed out the mounting, accumulative poo-piles.
But some of it is just plain Vomit/ Stank/ Pinch-Nose/ Gag Me w a Compost Shovel Worthy...
Also like any other style.

But there's also some real good sh** going on in contempo bluegrass AWA country-rock-fusion [if you can find it!]
Sometimes you can catch a lot of the Nville touring bands warming up at SC to some searyass scat.

There's this newer contray band, i fergit the name, ennywaze, it has this black dude in CnW garb doing some co'ntra'fied rappin'...the tiune they keep rotating [in our arses] is kind of like CnW meets Aerosmith meets rap...some in the industry call it "fresh" [as in, a good summer-sidewalk Cleveland Steamer]...I like to call it by it's anagram/acro-/pseudonym: what d'ya git when you mix commercial contray & commercial rap? Why, ya gits Crap, of course. /;-p
OK, well, i suppose it IS witty [AWA "catchy"], in a for the masses, cornball, cornpone, pop-culture [an oxymoron] nonsense-sense. /;-]

When you take these tunes and arrange them to a different groove. Hey LA Danny or Pocketplayer?? Remember that gig we caught at Cafe Cordial with John Robinson?? Dude playin cover tunes but taking them out.... sometimes WAAAAAAAYY out!! I love that kinda of stuff, especially when it with really good players that that groove!!

Man!! I've got to find this video I was watching the other day on the net. Some dude wrote a tune about his current wife meeting his girlfriend. I laughed my ass off listening to this guy. I'll see if I can find it again

Yes...that was about the only good thing I can say about my last gig. We were playing JBrown's Runnin On Empty and the guys in the band FINALLY listened to ol' Mr Drummer at rehearsal..to vamp a section out. It was the most fun we ever had. Yet, it took forever to get them to feel loose enuf to get outside da music box.

If you can find weekend warriors to do this...you really got sumthin!

TOTO did a compilation of several tunes last year in concert...it was amazing. They couldn't play all thier hits, so they packaged several into one tune...sweet. Similar idea of fusing sections together or extending one. This really is essential if a crowd wants more and you are out of tunes...it called S T R E C H I N G I T

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah, well that's a whole 'nuther ballgame. I've done some big band arrangements of oldies rock that totally cranked. You know, where it starts off in a samba and shifts gears to swing, that kind of thing.

A good segue/medley arrangement [even when changing it up w differing groove styles] in the hands of a competent bunch of musos is a fine thing <s>[Or even if it's just 1 out of the bunch beating it into their heads at rehearsal]</s>. [img]wink.gif[/img]

Although I love to play hard, I really don't listen to much "heavy" music anymore. Great to play, but not what I want to listen to recreationally. And I don't listen to much fusion anymore, unless I'm really in the mood to have Vinnie or Weckl or whoever tear my face off. Love it, but gotta be in the mood for it.

I love country, both as a player and a listener. The grooves are deep as a canyon, and the chops are flawless. And I love listening to older pop, rock, and R&B from the 60's and 70's, when the grooves were - to my ears, at least - much more "organic" for lack of a better word.

I also listen to a lot of classical music, much of which has no drums to speak of. But I'm much more a recreational listener than I used to be - I'm not trying to learn every lick on every record I hear anymore - I did that for many years, but now when I put on music, it's to enjoy it more than to learn from it.


EDIT - I just realized I approached this thread backwards from its actual topic line. Oh, well.
